Alan Gumm

Professor of Music Education, Director of Women’s ChorusAlan Gumm

Alan Gumm is professor of music education at Central Michigan University, where his responsibilities include Women’s Chorus, music education methods, choral literature, graduate research, and student teacher observation. He is the author of the books Making More Sense of How to Sing and Music Teaching Style, editor and contributing author to The Choral Director’s Cookbook, and contributing author to The Music Director’s Cookbook, all published by Meredith Music. His research and writing can be found in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education, Music Educators Journal, Choral Journal, Visions of Research in Music Education, and the Southeastern Journal of Music Education. Dr. Gumm’s previous experiences include public school choral and general music teaching in Kansas and higher education teaching at the University of Utah, Ithaca College in New York, and McPherson College in Kansas. His conducting experience includes many U.S. and European choir tours, and he was the founding conductor of the McPherson Chamber Orchestra. He has led many choral clinics for choirs of all ages and helped prepare Barbershop choruses and quartets, including helping propel the MountainTown Singers to international competition in 2008. Gumm has been recognized with numerous awards for teaching excellence. He holds a doctor of philosophy from the University of Utah, a master of music from Fort Hays State University, and a bachelor of arts from McPherson College. He is a member of American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, Society for Research in Music Education, and Society for Music Teacher Education.
